Commemorations

The "Music and the Arts: Still Our Only Future" conference will commemorate three significant historical and musical events in American music:

The 80th ANNIVERSARY of Still’s internationally-renowned work and pioneering composition, “The Afro-American Symphony” (composed in 1929).

The 60th ANNIVERSARY of the premiere of William Grant Still’s grand opera, Troubled Island (1949).

And the upcoming 75th ANNIVERSARY (2011) of William Grant Still’s triumphant appearance on the Hollywood Bowl’s stage as the first African-American to conduct a major American orchestra (1936).

Hollywood Bowl 1936
William Grant Still became the first African-American to conduct a major American orchestra when he led the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl in 1936. Still’s orchestral masterpiece, “The Afro-American Symphony” (composed in 1929) was featured at the history-making event.

“The Afro-American Symphony” stands as an internationally-renowned work that was the first significant serious composition to bring the Blues into the symphonic realm. In addition, this composition by Still was also the first serious symphonic work to incorporate the use of the banjo.

William Grant Still's "Troubled Island" was the first grand opera composed by an African-American to be produced by a major opera company for the American stage. It was produced in 1949 by the New York City Opera company.
